History


It began as a Carthaginian city under the name Zeli, then Roman as Zilis. In 1471, it underwent a major invasion, which marked its history: nearly 500 vessels and 30 000 Portuguese soldiers came to conquer and converted into a trading and strategic importance.

Asilah was rebuilt in the fifteenth century by the Portuguese who named Arzila, then fell to the Spaniards under the name Arcila, after the collapse of the Portuguese crown in 1579 at the Battle of Three Kings, until his capture in Saadian 1589 by Ahmed el-Mansour.

The Spaniards took possession later, but this time it was conquered by Ben Cherif Moulay Ismail in 1691. Its bombardment by the Austrian army in 1829 did not prevent that remains a base of piracy until 1912 and signarture Spanish protectorate, which lasted until 1956, when its final integration into the Kingdom of Morocco.
 

Raïssouni Palace
