RIR 2 Appart Hôtel

Located on Morocco’s atlantic coast, 45 km south of Tangier and 40 km north of Larache, Assilah (formally Zili), a town of Phoenician origins, was rebuilt by El Hakim II the Umayyad Caliph of Cordoba in 966.

The town was taken over and fortified by the Portuguese in 1471.
The Portuguese were succeeded by the Spanish but lost the town to Saadi Moulay Ahmed el_Mansour in 1589. The Spanish retook Assilah towards the end of the seventeenth century.
In 1829 Assilah was bombarded by the Austrians along with Rabat in an act of retaliation after pirates attacked an Austrian supply ship. This coast line has a rich history in pirates and smuggling.
The town was taken by Ahmed Raissouni in 1906, who built himself a palace here, before being chased out by the Spanish in 1924. Many will be familiar with his story as Sean Connery portrayed him in the film “The Wind and the Lion”.
After Moroccan independence in 1956, Assilah became a part of the Moroccan Kingdom.
